How to Measure without Measuring Cups

Updated: Jul 17

So, you've come across this fantastic recipe that has sparked not only your interest but also your sweet tooth. If you're anything like me, you first drool over the image of the dessert and then jump straight to the ingredients to see what all this recipe entails.

Once you've glanced over the ingredients list to determine if a visit to the grocery store will be required, you then decide when or for which occasion you will attempt this dessert. After all of your due diligence, you finally decide to make the dessert and discover that you don't own this weird measuring cup that the recipe calls for, like a 1/8 cup. You're already in the mix, unable to run out to Walmart or Target, so what do you do?

Well, I found myself in this predicament last weekend and, through a little bit of research, discovered how to measure ingredients without a measuring cup, and now I would love to share it with you. Who needs measuring cups when you have measuring spoons! Enjoy!

  • 1 cup = 16 tbsp

  • Half of 1 cup = 8 tbsp

  • 3/4 cup = 12 tbsp

  • Half of 3/4 cup = 6 tbsp

  • 1/2 cup = 8 tbsp

  • Half of 1/2 cup = 4 tbsp

  • 1/3 cup = 5 tbsp + 1 tsp

  • Half of 1/3 cup = 2 tbsp + 2 tsp

  • 1/4 cup = 4 tbsp

  • Half of 1/4 cup = 2 tbsp

  • 1/8 cup = 2 tbsp

  • Half of 1/8 cup = 1 tbsp

  • 1/2 tbsp = 1-1/2 tsp

Until next time! Happy Baking!
